WHY DOES EHS OFFER ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES?
Juniors and seniors at Edgewood High School may choose to take any of 12 Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered -- one for every 27 juniors and seniors. AP courses, which are administered by the College Board, give you the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school.
Students who then score a 3, 4 or 5 on the May AP Exam for the subject(s) they have studied have the opportunity to earn college credit in addition to their high school credit for the course.
Some EHS graduates have saved a semester or two of college work through this process!
For instance, 32 EHS 2010 graduates enrolled at UW-Madison, submitted 64 AP exam scores, and received 207 credit hours between them. AP courses can also help you develop the writing skills, problem-solving techniques and study habits that will prepare you for college academics.
FACTS ABOUT AP AT EHS:
- In recent years, nearly 1/3 of juniors and 1/2 of seniors took at least one AP course.
- Over 3/4 of the students who took the exams in the last few years have been eligible for college credit.
- Those who do not pass an exam still enjoy the advantage of having taken rigorous AP courses, demonstrating commitment to learning, which stands out in the college admissions process.
- The number of Edgewood AP Award Scholars (designated by the College Board) has risen annually from 13 in 2002 to 28 in 2009.

HOW TO ENROLL IN AN AP COURSE:
- AP courses are open primarily to juniors and seniors.
- Applications are available from the department chairs. Interested students must complete the application procedure of the applicable department and adhere to the procedural requirements.
- Enrollment is contingent upon departmental approval.
Once a student has enrolled in an AP course, he/she may not drop the course without consent of the instructor.
- Once a student has enrolled in an AP course, he/she may not drop the course without consent of the instructor.
- AP courses meet every day of the six-day cycle.
- Near the conclusion of the course, all students must take the appropriate Advanced Placement Examination administered at EHS by the Educational Testing Service for the College Board for the AP subject(s) they have studied. Students who successfully complete this exam may be eligible to receive college credit. (All colleges establish their policies independently. Students are encouraged to contact the admissions office of their prospective universities to receive specific credit requirements.)
- Enrollment in an AP course indicates that the student and parents understand and agree to the standards and criteria listed above.
- Because of the demands placed on students taking AP courses, students are encouraged to take only two AP courses at one time.
- Highly motivated and talented students may take additional AP courses in a year with the approval of their counselor, who will consult with the teachers of the AP courses.
