Like every independently funded non-profit organization, Edgewood High School relies on a variety of sources for the revenue essential to providing an excellent, Catholic high school education to students from the Madison metro area.
Tuition and fees are a major source of income. The remainder, about 40%, comes from the generous donors, special events, and interest earned on the investment of endowment funds. The
endowment allows the high school to combine gifts from
multiple donors into a single account that is invested in a
portfolio overseen by a special committee of
financial professionals appointed by the high
school. A percentage of interest
earnings from the endowment are
annually transferred to the high
school.

THE EHS SR. KATHLEEN O'CONNELL ENDOWMENT:
The endowment was begun in 1975-'76 and is named in honor of Kathleen O'Connell, O.P., who served EHS for 45 years, first as principal from 1955 to 1984 and then on the Board of Trustees until her death in 2000.
Ways to give to the endowment: Gifts can be unrestricted,
meaning EHS can use a
portion of the interest earnings to
support operational needs, or gifts can be
restricted in the fashion identified
by the donor at the time of the gift.
The most common type of
restricted endowment gift is to
support the school's need-based financial
aid program. Donors or their families and friends may also choose to establish a named endowment fund to create a lasting tribute. Some gifts are made during a donor's lifetime while other donors choose to include EHS in their estate plans as members of the
Heritage Society.
ENDOWMENT GROWTH AND CURRENT STATUS:
In most years since 1975, the fund has grown, through the contributions of donors interested in supporting Edgewood's long term financial stability and security.
The endowment is now approximately $3.5 million. While disbursements vary depending upon the amount of interest earned in any year, in recent years, most funds have been able to provide annual disbursement of about 5-6% of the principal. Of that amount, about 60% is dedicated to providing tuition assistance to deserving students based on financial need.
As the endowment grows, it provides a stronger base, which is used to help:
- keep tuition affordable,
- enhance educational programs,
- provide professional development for our valued faculty,
- and maintain facilities.
